WS1 - Civil Engineering - design competition on support structures

SUMMARY:
Students become civil engineers and learn how to constructively function as a team. Students will have the task of creating a supporting structure sturdy enough to hold a book. Surface area, time & materials are a few constraints students will compete to overcome.

OBJECTIVE:
To build a structure at least 6" tall to hold a book.

TERMS TO LEARN:
stress, strain, structure failure, safety, compression, torque

INTRODUCTION:
Engineers use the concept of design, build, test everyday. You will become a civil engineer to design a structure at least 6" tall to hold a book. Think about how a chair is made, a table, a bridge, etc?. think about shapes like circles, triangles, squares, cubes, cylinders etc.

WS2 - Internet I - Digital Imaging

WS4 - Robotics I - Robotics, why do we need them?

SUMMARY:
One has only to watch the news to know the emergence of robotics in our scientific and private communities. In the microelectronics industry 80% of the equipment used to manufacture our much needed chips depend on robotic technology to handle our product (humans are far to dirty and an unacceptable source of contamination). Also take for instance the police and fire departments. Both utilize robots where it is to dangerous to commit human beings to. Police bomb squads use a robot to retrieve suspected un-detonated bombs. Police swat squads use armed robotic units to enter hostile premises to negotiate in hostage and terrorist situations. There are robots in use by the fire departments that can see through smoke, operate in toxic environments, and are equipped to retrieve a downed human being from a room engulfed in flames. We successfully landed a research robot on Mars and retrieved much needed scientific data. We send them to debts in the ocean to explore deeper than is safe for manned exploration. Radio Shack sells a robotic lawn mower that will cut and mulch your grass while you sip lemonade in the shade. For $1500.00 you can purchase a fully autonomous robotic dog from Sharper Image. Robot Wars is one of the most popular TV imports from England. I will demonstrate how the avrage student can enter the high tech world of Robot Technology.
