Mark your calendars: Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010 Thanks for the support during FreshStart Fall 2009!!!!!! |
Year in Review!!During 2009 NSBE National Convention in Las Vegas, Gregory Harrington, AA-NSBE Chapter President, was awarded the “Above and Beyond Award” and also named Region V AE Member of the Year.
Awarded by the NSBE Executive Director of NSBE, Carl Mack
|
Tasks performed that lead up the award included:
- Leadership during AA-NSBE's March 2008 Spring FreshStart 2008 program, which was held at Dell.
FreshStart is a program that introduces multiple types of engineering to 6th – 12th graders. The event includes interactive workshops and technology give a ways (this event gave away a donated Dell Inspiron M1530 RED XPS laptop (valued up to $1500)
- During the AA-NSBE fiscal year (August 1, 2008 – July 31, 2009), Greg returned to the role
of President of the Chapter. A significant accomplishment for our local community, local members, regional
members, and national members was Greg's leadership and creation of the Back To School Parade in the Austin area on August 24, 2008.
The mission was to celebrate education and the return to school in the form of a parade in Austin, TX, and purchase school supplies for the students who need them. We hosted the 3 mile parade, and gave complete grade appropriate school supplies (in back
packs) to over 750 students. - As President of AA-NSBE, Greg wanted to extend AA-NSBE's visibility within our companies. We hosted the AA-NSBE Road Shows for our meetings.
- We visited IBM, Applied Materials, Freescale, and Dell.
- Topics for the AA NSBE Road Show were:
- IBM - "Get Out of Your Own Way To Be Successful" by Gordon S. Jones
- Applied Materials - "Making Usage of Solar Energy In Your House" by Dr. Fred Adurodija
- Freescale – "Developing a Winning Business Model: Insights and Advice for Tech Startups
Seeking Funding" by Arvin Poole - Dell - "Marketing Yourself For A Promotion" by Preston James
- For the first time EVER, all 6 NSBE 2008 Fall Regional Conferences/Professional Development Conferences (FRC/PDC) had a cyber café with laptops and printers. As you may recall, 2 sets of over $60,000 worth of Dell equipment traveled across the country (1 set from Dallas to Seattle [Microsoft] to Detroit … other set from North Carolina to New Jersey to Florida).
Thanks again for the continuous support!!!
NSBE Mission: To increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.
